Without these qualities and characteristics, there would be no clear definition to what the word leadership means, and therefore there would be no word called leadership because these qualities of an individual is what makes a leader.
Enthusiasm is an important quality to possess in leadership. Many times projects and missions are not successful for many reasons. In the article by Denise Fattal, author of How to be an Effective Leader, it states that "Many people believe that the reason for failure is because no one puts in much of their personal effort as a team to accomplish the goal, but the real reason for the failure is because there was a lack of enthusiasm that was demonstrated from the leader to the team" (p.4). There are times when the mission or goal may seem impossible and never being able to set a foot on it, but without the proper enthusiasm from the leader, how will the team ever know if either the mission is possible or impossible? By observing their leader's enthusiasm, followers are able to determine how much of their own enthusiasm they should put into the mission because they see their leader as the prime example. By having the enthusiasm from a leader, teams are able to function better and recognize the importance of accomplishing a certain goal by a certain deadline. When the leader has the enthusiasm, they are also focused on the mission. Being focused on the mission means to concentrate on what steps need to be done in order be successful. To be focused also means to have a passion for the mission and to not let any type of distraction to get in the way of the mission, and if distractions get in the way, the leader should overcome the obstacles and keep progressing by being motivated for the team and for the mission.
Another important quality that a leader needs to possess is being emotionally stable in order to carry out his or her duties. No matter how good or bad of a leader someone maybe, there will always be time when a leaders emotions will come into effect.
