The Orange Free State in 1910

" With the all of the exports, except diamonds, going to the Orange Free State's neighbours, trade between the territories was vital for survival.
The capital of the Orange Free State was Bloemfontein, which was fairly centrally located. Bloemfontein sits in the middle of an extensive network of railways that connect all the major towns together. Other major towns in this territory were Johannesburg, Kroonstad, Harrismith and Jagersfontein. Harrismith and Kroonstad were known for being the "only towns where the white inhabitants outnumbered the coloured population." Jagersfontein owed its existence to the importance of a diamond mine. .
Transportation, as well as communication, in the Orange Free State is mostly done through the extensive state owned railroad. There are also "well-kept high-roads" connecting all the towns, as well as a government mail cart to places that the railway doesn't touch. There was also a very organized postal system and an "extensive telegraph system" . The most popular form of transportation among the inhabitants is the "light Cape cart" and a wagon drawn by oxen to take produce to the markets. .
In 1910, the Orange Free State was represented in the British Union government by "sixteen senators and seventeen members of the house of assembly" . The British seemed to be fair when dealing with the Orange Free State, as many wars arose over the tribal areas that would become part of the Union. Many of the white inhabitants were willing to accept British rule and as Britain promised the natives "sovereignty over large areas" of land they began to accept it as well. As the British moved in the first time, many wars broke out between the farmers and the natives. The majority of the whites wanted to be under British rule as long as it was effective and protected them from their enemies. Yet the natives saw how many of the other tribes lost land and rights to so many things and were afraid of that.
