Yet, in countries where cigarette advertising are prohibited, the cigarette companies open up teen nightclubs that have cigarette brand names; the companies give away tickets to rock shows in exchange for empty cigarette packs. To include, companies give away kites or notebooks with cigarette brand names on them; or sell fashionable clothing. (Elearnor) Because of these advertising most smokers try their first cigarette between age eleven and fourteen believing, that smoking will make a person more beautiful. (Elearnor ).
             On the other hand, some teens believe smoking makes a person seem older. Eventually, smoking will make a smoker seem far older than he will or she is. Smoking causes skin to wrinkle more and at an earlier age. Yet, teen seem to still want to smoke, it is the adult thing to do. Nevertheless, as a health risks become better known, the number of adults who smoke continues to drop. In 1964, the year the Surgeon General first announced that smoking causes lung cancer, almost half the adult population smoked (42 percent.) Since then it has fallen to 26 percent, and most of those adult smokers wish they never started smoking. (American) Yet, knowing that information, the numbers of high school students who were frequent smokers rose from 14 percent in 1993 to 16 percent in 1995. (Elearnor).
             One of the main reason teens begin smoking is peer pressure, a term used to describe the influence of friends and other teens. When a teenager is around someone who smokes, that person is more likely to smoke than a person who has a nonsmoker friend. Consequently, the same incident goes for young teen that has older siblings or a parent who smokes. In some cases, this is because the person looks up to his or her family member or friends and wants to be like them. Sometimes young people smoke to fit in with the in crowd, or they feel pressured into smoking. Feeling left out or been teased for refusing to do something are often strong motivators.
