COMPARISON

Life is what one makes of it, whether it be going to college, or being outgoing and spontaneous by making choices without other peoples input. No matter what the circumstances, choices have to be made, and those choices can determine the outcomes of a person's life. In the poem "The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost, and the song "No such thing" by John Mayer, the two pieces share many similarities in the message the writer is trying to get across. Many people feel like life is pre-determined while others make their own choices, not knowing where it may lead, but at least they"d be doing what they wanted all along. .
In the song "No such thing", John Mayer is writing through the eyes of a teenager, preferably a male, in High school just trying to get by, doing as he was told, but not what he wanted. He went along with everyone else, as if his life was already planned out, but he always knew "something's better on the other side". Much like the poem "The Road Not Taken", the writer was using imagery and symbolism to get his point across. In the poem, there are two paths, which symbolize two paths in life. One path was continuously used, while the other looked as thought it hadn't been used at all, and the person in the poem had to choose between them. Everyone used the one path, knowing its outcomes, and would automatically guarantee a destination, while the other couldn't guarantee anything but it's worth the risk, "and that has made all the difference". The path that was less traveled is much like the "other side" the person from John Mayer's song is imagining. He is on the verge of taking the same path as everyone else, but then realizes there is something better, and ends up taking "The Road Not Taken" which was completely worth it all. .
The choices one makes might not always be the right one, but who is it that decides what is right, and what isn't? Themes in both pieces are much alike in that they both have to do with choices in life and their outcomes.
