Depression is serious mental health problem. Everyone experiences mood swings, disappointments, and the normal grief from loss of someone you love. But a severe depression that interferes with the ability to function, feel pleasure, or maintain interest is a serious illness. Researchers have demonstrated that it results from biochemical imbalances in the brain. Anyone can be diagnosed with depression, children, women, men and the elderly. Here at Cedarville University, freshmen experience a form of depression during their first year. .
Depression can be triggered by different emotions. For example, depression includes sad moods, lost of interest or pleasure in activities that were once enjoyed, change in appetite or weight, difficulty sleeping or oversleeping, physical slowing or agitation, energy loss, feelings of worthlessness or inappropriate guilt, difficulty thinking or concentrating, and recurrent thoughts of death or suicide. Freshman students at Cedarville University experience at least one or more of these symptoms. .
According to my survey, Home sickness maybe one of the first reasons why freshmen students at Cedarville University become depress. The reason they get depress or show signs of being depress is because leaving for college maybe the fist experience of the student being along. The student is taking out of there confort zone therefore they may struggle from being away from home. .
Stress is a factor that plays a big role during the first year. Depending how it is handle determines weather or not depression is a factor. Stress can be controlled but if it isn't it can bring you down. Stress can be caused by lack of concentration, lack of sleep, having difficulty adjusting to a different atmosphere. New students maybe be use to receiving good grades but once they fail they may be an area where they become upset and also unable to concentrate. Failure is a common thing at college.
