Art

" Will feels that a connoisseur, one who has respectable judgement concerning art and appreciation for it, forms opinions based on characteristics that "transcend" those relating to politics and culture - beauty and exquisiteness. Therefore, in order to be fine, art must have qualities of great beauty and must not have qualities relating to politics and culture. However, postmodernism concentrates more on the workings of society and is democratic and thought provoking, and George Will criticizes contemporary art's consequent inferiority to traditional art. Will feels that postmodernism evidently is unworthy of its support and popularity. .
"The Physical Impossibility Of Death In The Mind Of Someone Living" by Damien Hirst is clearly a contemporary piece of artwork that George Will would think does not deserve appreciation or popularity. It is composed of a full-size tiger shark preserved in a huge tank of formaldehyde. The shark was obviously real and soft, and it was displayed like it was in a natural habitat. Its eyes looked constantly forward, at nothing in particular, and its mouth was hanging open. The huge animal seemed so menacing that you could almost sense death in the air. Yet, after a second glance, it looked dangerous only in a passive sort of way; the caged and preserved aura distanced the viewer from the animal and the thought of death. The piece overall was visually intriguing and made you question your mortality, but Will would still disapprove of this work because it is the total opposite of what Will thinks constitutes a piece of high quality. The piece is extremely unselective and nonexclusive; it dealt mainly with the thought of death, which applies to all and is comprehensible to all. It was also far from aesthetically pleasing. The piece was only a simple animal preserved in a tank, so it had no exquisite details, balanced harmony, or anything else that would make a piece of art have great beauty.
