Fantasy Deserves More Credit


             The Neverending Story is quite similar in this sense. This book too is based around a hero character that is introduced in the beginning as a weak and defenseless boy who had no friends and was constantly being bullied. "They shout all sorts of things. This quote is part of a conversation Bastian has with the Bookstore owner and the author basically introduces to the reader that Bastian is a weak boy who keeps getting chased and picked on by the bullies. The fact that he had no friends gave the author the chance to introduce to the reader that his way of dealing problems was through reading. It provided Bastian with an escape from reality. As the book continued, Bastian began to emerge from his weak, defenseless self shown in the beginning of the novel into an incredible hero figure that was able to save the magical world of Fantastica several times. You see many changes in Bastian, the most important being his rise of self-esteem and self-worth. This provided him with an opportunity to grow and mature to the point when he returned home, back to reality, he was able to deal with the bullies and his other problems much better. .
             With fantasy stories having this common trait, it is nice to read about to see the emergence and growth of characters and it is something different to read and study and .
