law and order

The public is very critical of judges and what they do. Some of the criticisms can be justified and some are stated through pure dislike of the judiciary system but nearly all comments are made by people who have little or no true understanding of the judiciary. Judges have an incredibly difficult role to fulfill and the public's criticisms only make it harder for them to perform. "We live in a society that regards both punishment and mercy as desirable." (Wockner, 2002) These comments are often due to the media and its limited coverage of the judicial system. A large proportion of the surveyed group has said that judge's decisions are too lenient and there are problems within the judicial system. Such problems are inevitable as judges are only human and have a conscience. They have to punish the convicted, made an example of them to others, ensure they will not commit any more crimes whilst satisfying the community and protecting the community and victims from the offender. "Years of judicial experience do not lighten the Load" (De Jersey. 2001) Basically, Chief Justice De Jersey is saying that no matter how good your credentials are or how many years you have been on the bench, it does not make the job easier. The survey also showed a few other problems that were shared by the public. Such concerns were that in some cases judges are ignorant of the common people or that their social status is too high and they are out of touch "for too long our judges have sought to remain aloof from the public they are meant to serve." (The Australian, 2002) Many of these problems and more are however only based on media stereotypes and could be rectified. .
Most of the public's problems or concerns and ideas are perceived because of the media attention that some court cases attract. These problems can be resolved easily and cheaply by merely ensuring better coverage and praise for good decisions so the public does not think that all the judiciary does is send people to jail and make bad decisions, or decisions that the public doesn't agree with.
