Blackberrying by Sylvia Plath

The poem Blackberrying' by Sylvia Plath deals with the reflective descriptions of a journey the narrator makes through a blackberry alley. .
The poem is effectively structured in three distinct paragraphs and the journey through the blackberry lane represents the author's life. In the introductory sentence of the first stanza, Nobody in the lane, and nothing, nothing but blackberries', the use of repetition and double negatives shows the monotony of her life and a sense of emptiness. This powerful image represents death and symbolises elements of turbulence and oppression. The contrast between the descriptions bush of flies' and wing panes in a Chinese screen' also in the second stanza seems to suggest that life contains both beautiful delicacies and negative components. .
In the last stanza, the personification, the wind funnels at me, Slapping its phantom laundry in my face', implies that the author progression and development in life is impeded by her domestic obligations. However, at this concluding stanza, author ultimately reaches her life's end and achieves oblivion. .
