Home Schooling


It was a socially acceptable means of giving your child some kind of an education. Many of these families home schooled because they had to, not because it was more of a benefit to the child.
             In the early 1900's was when the nation started to become more of an industrial nation, and less of agriculture. This movement brought different lifestyles of families, it also brought different views on education. During the 1900's many families began to move into town from the remote country side to seek more money working in a factory. Because everyone lived so close, families sent their kids to public schools. This is what every family did in these days all in an effort to try to be the typical suburban family. In these industrial years, which lasted until the late 1980s, it was socially unacceptable for parents to teach their children at home. .
             Only just recently has school been treated as a full-time affair taught professional teachers. Classroom schooling has been accepted as the norm by most of the nation and the recent rise in homeschooling has come to many as a surprise (Lines, 2000). The people who first started the modern homeschool often kept what they were doing a secret and those who were discovered often faced fines or possibly jail (Lines, 2000). .
             Today, all states now accept homeschooling as a legally acceptable alternative, as states gradually change their laws for homeschooling. Regulations, however, vary from state to state, and some states have additional requirements such as an evaluation of homeschooled students, minimal education levels, or testing for the teacher who is homeschooling the children. (Lines, 2000). Even today many families will stay "underground- for fear that the legalalities of homeschooling will again change, or because they fear the general public will make a mockery of their teaching practices.
