Beyound the written word there was propaganda in the streets, riots and rally, "fururists evenings" which included concerts and theatre but all with a means to propagate the futurist message of youth and speed and reinvention. The message of the futurists was"nt particularly innovative but the way it was spread was.
Futurisms aim was the "Cultural Rejuvenation" (Martin xxvii) of Itay. The poltical situation in Italy is essential in understanding Futurist motivations and ideas, the increasing sence of national identity, which triggered the question of to how much an extent was futurism a political manifestation due to its associations with Mussolini and fascistism. It has been noted that Marientte movement was prophetic of fascism, the difference being Futurism was appealing to an international audience where as fascism was very insular.
F.T.Marienetti was the founder of the futurist movement in 1909, when the first manifesto was released. The futurist movement can be viewed in two stages: the futurist manifestos of 1909-1911 when futurists exhibited in Paris and secondly "Mature Futurism"- a formal and physical expansion, more closely linked to fascism and which ran more closely with the avant-garde spirt. Futurism was later linked with cubaism, to a greater extent in 1913.
It is possible to view a distingt develpement in the technical changes in Italian futurist painting, Running from the first manifesto printed in "Le Figaro" by Marientti in 1909 until the First World War of 1914. The first manifesto is important in setting out the guidelines of theory and practise for the Futurist movement, in encouraged artist to seek insiration in contemporary life, and secondly to extricate themselves from exsiting institions and traditions. It would appear in the early years an attempt was made to guide the futurists artistbut as the years advance the individul artists were subject to differing influences and changing motivations.
