In order to understand the thought process behind an author's piece of literature, it often helps to examine the rhetoric of its content. This rhetorical analysis is especially useful when drawing a comparison between two persuasive arguments. By grasping these three appeals it becomes much easier to identify various similarities and differences between the multiple persuasions. Ethos, pathos, and logos provide insight into the author's character and how he or she is dealing with the intended audience. A solid subject to examine these appeals is the idea of profiling to aid the anti-terrorism efforts of the United States post September 11th. Two articles composed on this idea are Charles Krauthammer's "The Case for Profiling" and "Safety and Freedom" by Wendy Kaminer. In Profiling, Krauthammer proposes a push for profiling at airports nationwide. It is his belief that nearly every terrorist who boards a plane with cruel intentions fits a certain complexion and description which can be singled out. By not focusing in on this character, airport security is wasting time and delaying regular airline passengers from beginning their trip. While Krauthammer sees profiling at airport security posts to be beneficial and good, Kaminer opposes its prejudice approach and also considers it to be ineffective in her Safety. Rather than focus in on airports alone, she examines the big picture as a whole nation and our ineffectiveness to improve anti-terrorism methods. The main point Kaminer explores is how the fight on terrorism has been hurt by "incompetence and venality", rather than no respect for the liberties of all occupants of this country. Both authors use methods of rhetoric to establish their viewpoint with the intended reading audience. Krauthammer and Kaminer have both similar and different uses of ethos, pathos, and logos to assert their respective viewpoints on anti-terrorism efforts.
