Son in the Afternoon


             Williams is a story about a guy name Wendell, who is upset about the fact that his mother is always out working. Wendell's mother Nora is a maid who works for Mr. & Mrs. Couchman in Beverly Hills. She takes care of their son Ronnie, while his mom Kay is out. Wendell doesn't like Ronnie because he does not respect Nora and he is also jealous of Ronnie because Nora never gave Wendell the attention and affection that she gives Ronnie. While Wendell is at Mr. Couchman's he runs into Kay. One thing leads to another and they start making out. They hear Ronnie coming but Wendell doesn't let go of Kay because he wants Ronnie to see his mom with a colored guy who had just shouted at him. In this story William is trying to show how jealousy can make people revengeful and immature. .
             The central character in this story is Wendell. Even though he hates picking up his mom from work he still does it everyday, which shows that he cares about his mom. When Ronnie yells at Nora, Wendell yells back at him for not respect his mom. We can also see that Wendell is jealous of Ronnie because his mom gives Ronnie more love then she ever gave to Wendell, her own son. His behavior with Kay and the fact that he doesn't let go of her because he wants Ronnie to see his mom with another man to take revenge, shows his immaturity.
             The central conflict in this story is an external one. Based on the central idea we can see that there is a conflict between Wendell and Ronnie. Wendell is jealous of Ronnie because Nora spends more time taking care of Ronnie then she ever did for her own kids. Wendell doesn't like the way Ronnie talks to Nora. Wendell is frustrated and annoyed and he takes his anger out on Ronnie by yelling at him. To take revenge he doesn't let go of Kay when she was trying to pull away because he wanted Ronnie to have an image of his mom with a colored guy in is head forever.
