Lucielia Louise Turner and Her

This is an example of how some people will stay with someone just to have someone there even if they are being treated badly.
"Ciel was trying to remember exactly when it had started to go wrong again"(91). To cook rice, you must read the instructions. Like reading the instructions, Lucielia is trying to figure out what is going wrong between her and Eugene. "The months since Eugene's return began to tick off slowly before her, and she examined each one to pinpoint when the nagging whispers of trouble had begun in her brain"(92). This is an example of how Lucielia is examining the situation. She is realizing that Eugene is changing, for the bad. She believes the baby on the way is making her sick, but she does not want to believe it. Like the rice she is beginning to get heated. "Ciel jumped when the front door slammed shut"(93). When Eugene would come home, he would slam the door and turn his music up as loud as it could go. He would wake up Serena and act very cold toward Lucielia. Ciel was very scared to go see Eugene when he would come home. "Ciel walked into the living room with the motion of a swimmer entering a cold lake"(93). This is a perfect explanation of how Ciel feels. It hurts to enter, its cold, and she can't find a way out of this situation. Every time Eugene enters the apartment he wants to pick a fight, Ciel does not know why he does this and it leaves her confused and hurt. She is hurt because she doesn't do anything wrong to deserve such horrible treatment. Eugene knows that Serena is sleeping, but he insists on turning the radio up so he can pick yet another fight with Lucielia. Lucielia becomes accustomed to fights and he is so predictable that she knows what he will say or do to start the bickering. He then makes Ciel feel guilty that he cannot do what he wants in his own house. Since Ciel is a very loving person, she tries to accommodate him as best as she can, but the burden never ends.
