Bombers were built to carry a heavy yet delicate payload, which is what modern commercial planes are also built to do. When the bombers went out of commission at the end of the war it was a perfect opportunity for an entrepreneur to set up a company using cheap bombers which otherwise would of have been left to rust in a plane graveyard. This entrepreneur was called Vladimir Raitz and the company was called Horizon holidays. .
Further technological development occurred in 1969 with the jumbo jet (Boeing 747). This aircraft had several impacts on the package holiday market:.
 It was possible to fly further in less time, thus making long haul destinations more accessible.
 The increased capacity (400 seats) on the jumbo jet also meant that the price per seat was reduced, thus lowering package holiday prices further.
 As Jumbo jets began to be used more, the smaller aircraft were available for charter operations2. .
             2.2 Computer technology.
Computer technology is advancing at a rapid pace and for any company to keep up with the competition they have to keep up with the times. In the past the travel agents would take down bookings and then have to telephone to make the reservations. No travel agents in England would use pen and paper still to write bookings down they all use computers because they can communicate instantly with other computers round the world forming a giant communications network. Thompsons, the UK's largest tour operator used a booking system called viewdata systems. This move by Thompsons forced travel agencies to use the system in order to make bookings faster quicker and for cheaper, because time is money. .
The airlines developed computer reservation systems (CRS). Travel agencies have direct access to the CRS, which gives them flight times, fares, seat availability and passenger reservations.
