Ironically, he doesn't believe in the restriction of books, however, his whole career is based upon this.
Once Montag starts reading his collection of books, the reason why people believe books are so horrible is shown. The entire nation has been taught that literature only leads to awful feelings. The definition of censorship is "Prevention of disturbing or painful thoughts or feelings from reaching consciousness except in a disguised form." (Dictionary.com) That's that exact thing happening throughout this novel. For example: A friend of Mildred, Montag's wife, had just heard a poem and said, "I knew it would happen. I've always said poetry and tears, poetry and suicide and crying and awful feelings, poetry and all that mush." (Bradbury 101).
Gaining knowledge that arises from reading books can be dangerous, and the government doesn't want to put up with this risk. It shows that people are superior to others, but people are taught to be equal. As Fire Captain Beatty says,.
"Not everyone born free and equal, as the Constitution says, but everyone made equal. Each man the image of another, then all are happy, for there are no mountains to make them cower, to judge themselves against." (Bradbury 58).
No longer can books be read, not only because they might offend someone, but because books raise questions that often lead to revolutions and chaos. .
The primary purpose of the constitutional and the guarantee of a free press was to create a fourth organization outside the government as an extra check on the three official branches. The Bill of Rights expressed freedom of speech and rights in the First Amendment. It is read:.
