antigone

He says he has wronged no one, which means that his actions are just. "A man who is good for anything ought not to calculate the chance of living or dying; he ought to only to consider whether in doing anything he is doing right or wrong -acting the part of a good man or of a bad one." (Plato, 29). In this case, what Creon was doing was not just, according to Socrates. It is important to bring up another viewpoint of Socrates that will better clarify this standpoint. Socrates reveals himself as a very spiritual man. He claims that in order to believe in human beings and matters, one must believe in supernatural matters. Subsequently, one cannot believe in supernatural matters without believing in supernatural beings. The only kind of supernatural beings according to Socrates were gods and the children of gods. (Plato 29, 36). This goes to show that Socrates put god or in other words human matters before the State. .
The views of Antigone were very similar to this. She was morally bound by the gods to bury her brother so that he could reach heaven. It is important to realize that the power of the gods played a role in the life of Antigone that greatly surpassed the power of Creon and the State. When Creon asked Antigone, " you made free to overstep my law?" (Sophocles, 17), Antigone replied by stating, "Zeus who ordered it, Nor Justice, dweller with the Nether Gods, Gave such a law to men- (Sophocles, 17). It can be seen here that Antigone not only greatly respects the powers of God, but she also will uphold the powers and wishes of the Gods at any cost. She was willing to give her life to uphold the cause, which was to bury her brother (part of her kin). She goes as far as to say, "It is no shame to pay respect to our own flesh and blood," (Sophocles, 20). This is a situation in which Socrates would have taken the side of Antigone rather than Creon. Socrates dissuaded people from pursuing personal aspirations and asked that they pursue a goal of moral excellence.
