On July 3, 1775, at Cambridge, Massachusetts, he took command of his ill-trained troops and embarked upon a war that was to last six grueling years. During these years Washington gave up his personal and political life in hope that America would come out victorious, and subsequently win its freedom. This dedication carried over to the 1790's after the war had been fought, when he was elected by the people as president in 1789. Washington had the support of the people, and according to Joseph J. Ellis, author of Founding Brothers, was "A legend in his own time, Americans had been describing Washington as "the father of the country" since 1776- which is to say, before there was even a country.".
