The sergeant tends to talk down to Milly and Gran, showing little respect for the family powers represented by Gran, and speaking to her as if she were a naughty little child. This is established right from the beginning of the text when the sergeant asked "Been behaving yourself?" to which Gran is quick to reply "Have you?" This conversation illustrates the ongoing power struggle between the white people, who are represented as seeing themselves as the superior race, and the Aborigines who refuse to accept such discriminating views. .
In conjunction, "Wild Cat Falling" by Mudrooroo takes a different approach to convey the feeling of inequality between Europeans and Aborigines. The passage is written very differently, with more educated language. The way in which the experiences are retold to form a story in a first person point of view makes the messages more obvious than those hidden in the dialogue like "No Sugar". This use of first person point of view can allow the reader to relate to the protagonist effectively. This is because of the ability of the reader to have an idea of what the protagonist is thinking and feeling. Because of this we are able to empathise with his struggle for identity and marginalisation from society. "Prison was a refuge of a sort where I was nearer belonging than anywhere. But now in these crazy two days I have felt the sun again and seen the sun and breathed the fresh sweet air. Does it have to be over again so soon?" This thought by the Duggan Boy (protagonist) clearly expresses his marginalisation from society.
Flashbacks are used by the Author of "Wild Cat Falling" to also achieve the effect of Aboriginal Experience. Flashbacks allow the reader to see that when young, the protagonist could never place himself in society. He was forced to between two ways of life; that is of the "whites" and that of that Noongars. Language such as "commanded", "cell", "alone", "cold", "dark", "scared" and "remote" evokes sympathy in the reader towards the described unstable, sad life of the character.
