Glass Menagerie


Another part of the achieving the dream is to share one's wealth and help others to achieve their goals. Yet the journey that one has to take to achieve the American Dream is long, rugged, and has many twists and turns. Even though not many people succeed completely, or to the level they want to, others keep trying and keep the Dream going.
             In addition to the pursuit of money, members of the real world pursue social relationships. Whether they are friendships or even dating, people enjoy and require the company of others. The real world changes rapidly with the new advances in technology and urges other members of reality to take the new inventions and infuse their lives with them. There is no time to sit and be idle in the real world because it requires all members to simultaneously search for financial power, social interactions, and to keep up with technology.
             Accordingly, by striving for financial power, social interactions and updated technology, Jim O'Connor represents reality in the play. He pursues financial power because he takes classes in addition to working at the warehouse. He describes why he is interested in taking classes on public speaking when he says to Jim, "It fits you for "executive positions! Ask yourself what is the difference between you an' me and men in the office down front? Brains? "No! " Ability? "No! Then what? Just one little thing "social poise!- (The Glass Menagerie, page 59). This explains that not only is Jim highly interested in gaining financial power in the world, but he is also incredibly focused on the importance of social interactions with others. He knows that in the real world it requires the ability to be able to converse with all different types of people. He has taken care of the relationship aspect of the real world through his engagement to Betty. Jim also excels in the technological portion of society because he says that he is, "Taking a course in radio engineering at night school.
