Home Memories

There was excitement and confusion in my mind. Confusion because of the nervousness of going to a totally new place. I thought as a student venturing into academics in the US, life will be considerably different from what was in India. The basic social and economic structure, fashion, food and the general life style may seem unfamiliar. .
I went to the customs and personal baggage checking area. I opened the baggage and the officer was scanning it. He found a gift which a friend of mine gave it to me in the last minute. Actually, it was a carton of cigarettes which I asked my friend to wrap in a gift cover and give to me as a present it to me in the airport. The officer questioned me "what's in there?" I being a little nervous told him, "it's a pack of cigarettes". He again enquired "why did you pack it like this?". I told him "it's a gift from my friend". He led me to a room where there was nobody and asked me to open the box. I opened it and took out one of the cigarette packet and gave it to him. .
He took a cigarette and smoked it ."hmm nice flavor " was his reaction. I could sense from the incident that I was suspected for carrying some illegal substance in the cigarettes. I was apologized for the inconvenience and I proceeded towards the waiting lounge. The place looked calm though crowded. Hearing the boarding call for the flight which I was supposed to board I stepped on the escalator to proceed towards the flight gate passing another series of security checks. .
I boarded the flight and was welcomed by one of the good looking air hostesses. It was my first international flight. Everything was fine and the plane was about to fly, when the pilot in the middle of the runway discovered that there's a technical problem and we had to wait for another hour. I dozed off as soon as the plane took off and after a couple of hours the air hostess woke me up for the lunch. I had my lunch and opened the window cover and looked outside.
