Police Corruption

Suffolk County, in cooperation with the NYPD internal affairs unit, arrested all of the officers involved and 49 civilians. The probe that lasted five months included undercover drug buys and electronic surveillance. Twenty-five vehicles were seized and over $30,000 in cash. Also seized was an undisclosed amount of drugs. The cops acted as venture capitalists and pooled their money to buy cocaine from known Brooklyn drug dealers for resale in Suffolk County. According to Suffolk authorities the cops made purchases that amounted to four ounces at a time. Eurell admitted involvement in the Southern District and to purchases of up to one kilo at a time (Van Natta, 1996).
One of the most recent cases of police corruption in Washington State is that of Police Chief David Brame. He recently shot his wife in the head, then himself in a shopping mall parking lot in Gig Harbor, Washington. This came just after the media exposed the domestic abuse allegations by his wife. Some think he should have never been a police chief, or for that matter a police officer at all. He had a history of domestic abuse, and even a rape charge. .
Brame was hired as an officer in 1981, despite a psychologist's recommendation against him. A second psychological test rated him a marginal candidate. Although city code requires a third psychological evaluation in such cases, Brame's personnel file shows no evidence that a third exam was done before he was hired (KIRO, 2003). When Police Chief Brame was chief of detectives, he and other top police officials decided not to pursue an insurance fraud case against City Manager Ray Corpuz in 1998. Three years later Corpuz promoted Brame to Chief of Police. This is an example of trading favors, Brame didn't investigate Corpuz, and in return, Corpuz promoted Brame.
One of the largest, most renowned cases of corruption comes from none other than the Los Angeles Police Department.
