The Federalists had come together to discuss secession and to propose seven amendments to protect influence of the northeastern states. As a result of this, the Federalists lost much power in American politics which caused their party to disappear in the year of 1815. This left the Democratic-Republicans unchallenged in American politics.
             The state of the nation was really great in the beginning of this era. It began as a burst of nationalistic fervor. The economic program that was adopted by Congress, which included a national bank and a protective tariff, showed the growing national unity in the new nation. The Supreme Court promoted the spirit of nationalism by establishing the principle of federal supremacy. The growing of industries and the growing of transportation also helped strengthen the nationalism of the American people. This helped increase national unity for it linked the western regions and the eastern regions linked together. The economy of the nation was a large force in the bringing together of the nation, and so the government took actions to bring the nation together. .
             This was only the good part of the Era of Good Feelings. The Era of Feelings was mostly filled with crisis and problems. During this period of time, there was the emergence of growing factional divisions in politics, and sectionalism between the northern and southern states. There was a great economic depression between the years 1819 and 1822 which roused bitter fights over questions of banking and tariffs. Although there was separation of the North and South (geographically), the sectional tensions between them were not hard to see. There were bitter feelings over the morality of slavery and the balance of economic power. During the Era of Good Feelings, political issues arose. These political issues would soon dominate American politics for the next forty years. .
             The Era of Good Feelings took place during the eight years of James Monroe's presidency which was from 1817~1825.
