Chesapeake Bay Colony vs New E

Chesapeake Bay Colony vs New England Colonies.
Although New England and the Chesapeake region were both settled largely by the people of English origin, by 1700 the regions had evolved into two distinct societies. This division occurred because of the different people that colonized the area. The colonists of New England were religious separatist or puritans while the colonists that went to Chesapeake were mostly young men and women sent to find gold.
Nearly all the colonist to Weymouth were in families, this shows that they have strong values and ties together and intended to stay in New England. For an example, on document A John Winthrop says that his goal was to create a Christian utopia for everyone to look up to, "a city upon a hill" At that time religion was a large part of the government. In some cases the people that ran the church had major influences in the government. In document D "The Articles of Agreement", it is easy to see that the bible is the basis of many laws. In addition, in document A Winthrop said "we must be knit together in this work as one man". He emphasised strong community. Because of the strong religious control and community the New Englanders stuck togeather when things went wrong. .
When things went wrong for the Chesapeake settlers they would think more independently and not always listen to authority. This is evident in document G when Governor Berkeley was worried about a rebellion. Also in document F when there was a near mutiny on the ship on its voyage to America. Because there were much conflict with the Indians the colonist that survived were very tough and independent and were not as easy to control. In document H, "Bacon's "Manifesto"" their strong feeling of independence is evident. They felt they could challenge Berkeley because they fought the Indians off with out his help.
The main focus of those in the Chesapeake was profit. As the members of the group were dying from malnutrition, the talk on the ship was focused on nothing but, "dig gold, wash gold, refine gold, load gold".
