Publishers of texts for reading could never anticipate providing text within the confines of one basal to meet the challenges facing emergent readers on any level. The diversity of reading levels within one classroom is so vast that one text could not adequately suffice. The stories that are selected for the anthologies of basals are teaching children on one level. I believe that teachers of reading should make the school library their selection ground for appropriate leveled texts, giving children opportunities to read texts relevant to their interests and individual teaching points, rather than forcing them into prescribed levels set forth by text companies. It was not until I looked at this basal that I truly digested the perils of basal reading. The stories within the basal that I examined were appropriate stories as they were selected from children's literature. However, expecting children to all have the same needs is the same as saying that we are going to treat all children of age 8 for chicken pox. The remedy needs to fit the disease. The approach needs to address the challenge. I know that was a long explanation about the level that the publisher intended this basal to approach, but during my explanation I had an "ah-ha" about what is wrong with this sort of reading instruction. For years, I have been teaching reading from the basal, thinking that I was a very proficient teacher for getting kids through the pre-primers/primers by the end of the year. I never took into consideration that they may not need or be ready for the skills contained within. Afterall more learned people than I , added their comments to the front of the basal. Who was I to judge what they had to say? In reading over the basal introductory explanations of the programs, these Doctors of Education all supported the structure of the basal utilizing terminology that was politically correct but not accurate accounts of the structure.
