And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger, those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee." This is a very powerful piece of rhetoric when used. Jules uses it in the same context every time he says it until the end of the movie when his tone and persona change. Jules" purpose is to show whomever the line is directed towards that he is more powerful than they are and they are dying for it. He says in the movie that he never really gave the line much thought, and that he just thought it was some "righteous shit" to say to someone before he killed them. However, he later thinks otherwise. .
This rhetoric is clear on all artistic proofs. The Ethos, Pathos, and Logos, or the character, emotion, and reasoning, are all clear, evident, and can't be much more concise than they already are. Also, the five Canons are executed well. The invention Jules has is remarkable and it's interesting that it is organized the same way every time the line is delivered. The style that he uses is language from the bible, so not everyone understands the true meaning. However, his memory and recall are perfect every time. The last Canon, delivery, is very important. Jules delivers this "speech" in a violent and fearsome manner, until the end of the movie when it's more like a teaching than a death threat. .
There are many different aspects on why the rhetor in some cases uses the language and why a certain rhetorical style is used. To better help understand the rhetoric, we must look at the influences of the situations that occur. History is a good way to help pin point certain areas of the rhetoric. For instance, this movie was written in 1994, but it is relating to the late-70's early-80's time period. This would explain Jules" quick temper and righteous motives. During the time that this movie was supposed to take place, black people were highly discriminated against and this very well indeed was fuel for Jules" fire.
