rate of reaction

By doing it every 10 seconds it gave readings fairly quickly which was important as the gas would probably be produced very quickly and so results will also need to be taken at a relatively good speed. The results will be taken for 100 seconds to give a good picture of what happens in the reaction not just a few seconds of it. From earlier experiments with marble chips and hydrochloric acid I found that it "fizzes- which creates a kind of splash which may actually spray out of the top of the conical flask. To stop this I put a clump of cotton wool in the neck of the flask this acted like a shield to prevent splashes of acid escaping from the flask while the reaction is was taking place. Cotton wool was used as it is able to let the gas through but not the larger water molecules.
After 100 seconds the experiment was stopped and the conical flask was thoroughly cleaned to remove any residue that may affect the next reaction. This time however the medium marble chips were used instead of small and after the medium was used the large was reacted and so on. In total this process was repeated 5 times. i.e. we conducted 5 reactions with small marble chips 5 reactions with medium sized marble chips and so on. However during all of these experiments the amount of acid and the concentration of the acid was kept constant to obtain fair results. I was also careful to always use the same weighing scales for each experiment as some may vary in accuracy. In total I am going to perform 20 reactions, this will give enough results to find a firm conclusion to the investigation. It is also enough to be able to calculate and average set of results for each size of marble chip.
During the experiment I am going to wear safety spectacles as a safety precaution from the acid as it could spill or splash into the eyes. I will also remain on my feet (not sit down) so that I could get out of the way easily if something spilt.
