Too Late the Phalarope

.
Sophie is an excellent narrator in many respects, she is a good observer, a good judge of character, and she has insight into the Vlaanderen family, especially the stressed relationship between Pieter and his father. By comparison with her stern, unforgiving brother, she is more tolerant and compassionate; but, even with all these wonderful traits Sophie's understanding is limited in many respects. Alan Paton exposes Sophie's limitations by showing her in the context of her culture. .
Sophie's chief limitation as narrator is her partiality toward her nephew. It is difficult to be unbiased, especially when it is a loved one. She herself acknowledges that she loves Pieter "perhaps beyond all wisdom" (12). Pieter also recognizes the excessive quality of her attention to him and at times openly resists what he describes as her attempts to "possess" him. It is Sophie's brother Jakob who points out her biggest problem as the narrator. Jakob states, "'Tante Sophie must write a history of the van Vlaanderens all the dates will be right, and all the facts be wrong'" (122). Although Jakob is not an unbiased source of information himself, his comments about Sophie show her distortions of the facts. .
Sophie's bias toward Pieter leads her to present him in a positive light. She regularly offers explanations and excuses for his actions, and she focuses on his virtues at the expense of the defects in his character. Her emphasis on his conflicts and his struggle to resist temptation not creates sympathy for him and his struggle. One strategy that she uses throughout her narrative is to shift the blame for Pieter's actions to other people, especially other women. Sophie does not attempt to hide his responsibility in committing adultery and violating the Immorality act, she justifies these actions as the result of female influences on his life. Sophie is unforgiving toward Nella for her failure to meet Pieter's sexual needs.
