She had at first a lot to say because she had, as well as other employees, "Wanted their rates raised so that they could average about twenty shillings a week."" (Act 1) but Mr Birling, "Refused-of course."" (Act 1) because of his gluttony- if he had given them a pay raise then he himself would be averaging a lower amount than previously. This shows his vanity because he would only be averaging a few shillings less but his employees might have had the money to feed their children, or buy a house. So he decided to tell Eva Smith to, "Clear out, and she went. That's the last I heard from her."" (Act 1). But when in the middle of the third act The Inspector says to him, "You started it- You made her pay a heavy price for it. Now she'll make you pay a heavier price still."" Mr Birling answers with slight hesitation, and unhappiness in his tone, " Look, Inspector- I'd give thousands-yes, thousands "" Trying to render the blame to someone else, offering money to try and show compassion, but the Inspector shuts him up harshly by saying, "You're offering the money at the wrong time, Mr Birling."" (Act 3). Mr Birling, having fired her, made her alone, homeless, unemployed until she applied for a job at Milwards, a clothing store, where she was accepted. .
             Eva Smith was always liked at Milwards by both customers and fellow employees, which was why it was surprising that she was fired because of a filed complaint, from Sheila Birling. Sheila had gone to the store that day with her mother and had wanted to try something "different- on that day. Both her mother and the assistant had been against it but she insisted on trying it on. She knew at once that the dress didn't suit her at all, after having tried it on, but when she saw Eva Smith hold up the dress to her own body she immediately became envious because, "She was the right type for it, just as I was the wrong type.
