That is why people go to nature they are expecting something form it and are not willing to put any effort forth till they feel they are going to get something in return.
The second question that rises is why do certain people do better in a situation then others? Why did the lady in A Blizzard Under Blue Sky leave nature an improved person, and in To Build a Fire the man ended up taking his last breathe before ever leaving the wilderness? The man was more educated in nature and was surely a better scout then the lady. To many people the man failure seems to make no sense. The reason for the man's death and the ladies success is much simpler then it seems. A human's likelihood of succeeding is based on their attitude, knowledge in a given situation, and their ability to analyze that situation. In the man's case he had the knowledge, but lacked both attitude and the ability to act efficiently to new situations. Many people would say the man in the story was educated and knew about winter and therefore should have done well by himself. He failed because he didn't have all the qualities needed to survive in these types of situations. He was unable to roll with the punches and make the best of what he was given. "It was not deep. He wet himself half-way to the knees before he floundered out to the firm crust." Pg 36. This was the first tip that the man would not make it out of the wilderness alive. Every aspect of him and his body were put to the test and turned out to be the fight for life. He immediately made a terrible decision to build a fire under a tree. After this turned out to be very ineffective he failed to create another fire; this was the test of his ability to act efficiently to new situations. This turned out to be the death of him. .
In A Blizzard Under Blue Sky the lady did a wonderful job of using her knowledge, great attitude, and ability to make the best of a situation to help her get the most out of her camping trip.
