World War II The Watershed Event

Women not only had to take after their home but hey had to go to work too. They needed to and take care of what the men were responsible for. In order for America soldiers to get the vital military equipment they needed overseas some one at home needed to produce them. Women had to take on traditionally male only jobs like loading fired machine guns, operating hydraulic presses, riveters, and drill press operators, to provide the military with what they needed. American women worked day and night. When the war was over and the men returned some woman were happy to go back to being the housewife but some women liked their independence. American woman experienced new opportunities, a sense of independence and their own individuality. The war allowed women to make decisions and it gave them a chance to fight for their rights. The development of the many civil rights movements for women's rights in the 1950's was a result of World War II.
The civil rights of African Americans were also significantly changed as a result of World War II. African Americans who fought in the war were still experiencing segregation and were pressuring the government for equality in the military and on the home front. African Americans viewpoint was that they were capable of performing the same duties as white men. So they should not be treated differently. At this point they were allowed to serve in the military they still had separate facility. Even though African Americans were experiencing such segregation and unfair treatment they still believed it was necessary to win the war and fight for their country. By fighting for their country it gave them the courage to fight for equal rights at home. With this belief African Americans formed an association called the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), which was an organization set forth to help protect and promote African American civil rights.
