Comparison Essay

The story "Where Are You Going? Where Have You Been?- immediately illustrates Connie's vanity. Connie likes to look at her reflection and knows she is pretty. (693-694). Connie is a teenager who is straddling between childhood and adolescence. She is bold and confident at home, but even with confidence, she still has a "high-pitched and nervous laugh- away from home (694). She is represented through the story as knowing little else about herself because to her being pretty is "everything"(694). She often walks by mirrors and windows so she can see herself. When Arnold Friend arrives, she hurries to see how she looks and wonders how bad she looks (696). As Arnold Friend is talking to her, she is studying her reflection in his sunglasses, instead of worrying of the danger of talking to this stranger (697). Dee's home and Connie's looks hold the same egotistical significance to each character. Pride in personal image plays a key role in the development of these characters as well as the relationships with their siblings.
SIBLING RIVALRY IS THE SHARED ASPECT IN BOTH STORIES. Dee and Connie are the more physically attractive of the siblings, the more cynical siblings and the more oppositional to their mothers. In "Everyday Use-, Dee is the older sibling with all the desirable physical and mental attributes. For a while, Mama thinks Dee hates Maggie (90). Maggie is younger, less attractive, and feels second-rate to Dee. Maggie's initial reaction to her sister's arrival was to run and hide (91). Dee undoubtedly sees Maggie as the inferior one, also. Maggie is generally the loser in this rivalry; however, Mama keeps her promise to give the quilts to Maggie even though Dee asks for them (94). Because of Dee's attitude towards life, Mama generally relates to Maggie better than she does to Dee. Likewise, Connie in "Where are you going? Where Have You Been?- also sees her sister as the less significant one.
