It's the prime factor in creating and sustaining a democratic society. But it has to be accepted that media today is hasty. It's incomplete, sometimes inaccurate. The media are imperfect, but they are also a necessity the society requires. This imperfect necessity is found to be the hinge of democracy, as it discovers things that, sometimes, even the people of great power do not want to be discovered. It is the only way public is going to find out about the issues that dominate in our lives. There are all kinds of power institutions in any democracy: the judiciary, the government, the elected representatives, the business community, etc. But what binds it all together is the media. Only through the media can the governing communicate with the governed. I think, there would be a universal state of uncertainty without media, because people simply wouldn't know what is taking place in the world. .
There is an opinion that the media spend too much time reporting bad news. But people have been complaining about it for a long time. "Nobody likes the man who brings bad news." It's true, media report a lot of bad news. But that's because there is a lot of bad news in our world. This is the reality. Media just brings the sufferings of the whole world to one person, to you or me. This is the place to start asking questions like: do we deserve to share the bad news and the physiological pressure connected with it. But I think this is the matter of our choice: the choice of building the reality and the choice of the reality with media. Basically, media gives us a lot of information as to the reality we live in. And we choose whether to build our lives just the way we see it, or to adapt to the conditions the media dictates us. .
Media responsibility to the public is to try to present reality, not wishful thinking. Its challenge is to strive to come as close as possible to that reality so that people can understand and can cope with the real world around them.
