Connie and a comparable girlfriend explore a neighboring shopping plaza. While Connie is indifferently walking at the shopping center, the narrator describes Connie's mouth as being "bright and pink on these evenings out"(8) and that she bears a jingling bracelet. In this quote, the narrator seemingly describes the manner in which Connie's lips reflect light or give off a glare as a vivid and an innocent pink color, which is likely to be her lipstick. Evidently, by reflecting glistening light from her physical self, Connie personifies her youthful innocence. Connie is also wearing a jingling bracelet, which is not only again reflecting light, which in turn represents innocence about Connie but signifies adolescence. Connie's bright pink lips coupled with her bracelet exemplify her representation of light, innocence and adolescence. .
A further example reveals that Connie draws upon physical elements to gain her representation of light. "Connie sat with her eyes closed in the sun, dreaming and dazed with the warmth about her as if this were a kind of love-(10). This quote illustrates that while Connie was in the sun, she gathered the warmth to a point of a kind of love and becomes the embodiment of light imagery and thus becomes the full depiction of innocence. Connie cannot become much more of the embodiment of innocence due to the reflection that she emits from the light, and purity of the brilliant sun. Finally, the last significant example of Connie's representation of light, innocence, and adolescence occurs when Arnold, the sinister character, arrives at Connie's house. Connie is wearing a bright green blouse, a color that traditionally .
signifies fertility and youthful innocence. As the story progresses, Arnold unrelentingly demands Connie to come with him for a ride in his car, but Connie feels pressured and threatened by Arnold. Thereafter, Arnold's menacing behavior transforms Connie's previously vibrant bright green blouse into a blouse darkened with sweat.
