Lives of the Saints

Arguments and accusations are constantly occurring between Cristina and her father. In the excerpt below, Vittorio describes the escalating tension between his mother and his grandfather:.
"Not a word passed between her and my grandfather: it was as if they simply did not see each other, as if they only sensed each other's alien presence lurking like a shadow nearby, and kept clear of it" (129). .
" he remained walled up in his stony silence his head bowed over his plate, while my mother sat turned away from him crosswise, her legs never under the table, as if she expected at any moment to have to rise up suddenly ." (130).
Cristina's father feels disgraced by her actions and cannot bear the looks and disrespect of the town's people. During Christmas, Cristina's friend Giuseppina and her husband come over to the Innocente house for dinner. After the couple leaves, Cristina's father remarks that:.
"They came here" .'to laugh at us" (144).
The grandfather begins to get paranoid by the action of the town's people and is overly shamed. As a result, he eventually resigns from his post as mayor and reverts to a life a near solitude. On the other hand, Cristina, being head strong and irrepressible, is not shamed by her actions nor is she subdued by the harsh treatment by people of the village and her father. The fact that she does not show any remorse for her actions is a contributing factor in the separation between her and her father and between her and the people of the Valle del Sole. People could not understand how she could act as if she was "better" than everyone despite the sin she had committed. In addition to the separation between Cristina and her father, Vittorio also notices the change of the relationship between him and his mother. Vittorio doesn't understand why his mother is suddenly spending a lot of time away from people and keeping to herself. He notices a distance is building up between them and he cannot figure why it is happening.
