In this stage babies explore their world by using their senses such as seeing, hearing, moving, touching, tasting and by using their motor skills, that are, their reflexes. For example when we touch the baby's lips it will suck or when we place our finger in the palm of an infant's hand, it will grasp it.
At first, the baby begins to explore its own body and soon it continues with exploring external objects seeing that these actions' results are interesting. Intentional behavior occurs, next. In this stage it can solve some simple problems like looking for objects that are out of sight. This is the result of developing object permanence, the understanding that objects exist in the environment whether the baby perceives them or not (Penrose, 1979). For example an old infant who searches for the ball that has rolled out of sight shows an understanding that objects still exist even when they are not in view.
The next step is goal-directed actions. For instance, a six-month-old baby cannot take the toys in a container toy, and it soon gives up trying. But an older child who has learned basics of sensorimotor stage will be successful. Through trial and error, the child will slowly build a container toy' scheme. First it will get the lid off, secondly it will turn the container upside down, thirdly it will shake if the items jam, and fourthly it will watch the items fall (Woolfolk).
At the end of the sensorimotor stage child advances towards the next stage, that is, problem solving. The child can think through and plan.

             2. Preoperational stage (2- 7 years):.
By the end of the sensorimotor stage the child can only use schemes tied to physical actions, so, he cannot recall the past, keep track of information or plan. To do them the child needs operations, which are actions a person carries out mentally rather than physically. Preoperational stage is the period when the child has not yet mastered but moving towards these operations.
