M2A is a disposable, but not reusable imaging capsule that is swallowed like any other tablet by the patient and moves swiftly through the GI tract by the aid of the natural movement of the bowel. The capsule functions by transmitting video signals as it travels through the GI tract. The signals consist of images of the walls of the GI tract, material in the GI tract, and detection of any bumps such as tumors in the GI tract. These signals are then stored in the receiving unit. Another helpful function of this capsule is that it allows doctors to trace the path that the capsule travels through to further their knowledge of the GI tract. Finally, the capsule is naturally excreted out of the body. No complications have been associated with swallowing the M2A capsule. The capsule is made of biocompatible material, which is immune to digestive fluids and acids and therefore will not get dissolved or destroyed.
While the capsule is traveling through the tract, the patient wears a wireless recorder belt around his or her waist. The recorder receives the signals that are transmitted by the capsule through an antenna, which is also placed on the patient's body. The advantage of the belt is that it allows patients to do their daily tasks during the time that the capsule is taking images of their GI tract.
