They may be able to draw conclusions from their observations but these will likely not be accurate if the variables are mixed. Sub-stage 3-A: Possible but not Spontaneous Separation of Variables. This stage is usually seen in older school age children to young adolescents. The subject can separate variables or keep others constant while measuring a variable of interest. They may make some accurate observations and conclusions because the results will not be skewed by mixing variables although some observations and conclusions can be made they may not be organized systematically and therefore the subject cannot carry observations any further as to exclude factors. Sub-stage 3-B: The Separation of variables and exclusion of Inoperant Links. This stage of formal reasoning may appear in mid-adolescents throughout adulthood. These subjects cannot only isolate variables but can begin to exclude other factors, eliminating the variables that do not play a role. The purpose of this exercise is to become familiar with the stages of formal reasoning and then to conduct Piaget's pendulum study and see if we can practically apply these stages for formal reasoning to the subjects involved. .
Piaget's task in relation to his theory.
Piaget's original theory is in regards to cognitive development. He had developed stages, which describe what level of cognitive development a child will fall into. The theory of formal resoning builds on this theory by focusing on how children or adolescents develop formal reasoning. I have included a table (table 2) that shows Piaget's stages of Cognitive development. This table was taken from page 109 of the Balk text (2001).
Table 2: Piaget's Stages of Cognitive Development.
             Stage Description Approximate age.
Sensorimotor Stage Physically exploring the environment resulting in a behavioural schemata Birth to 2 years.
Preoperational Stage Construction mental symbols to understand reality 2 to 7 years.
