Televison Violence

It has been proven that when children watch violent television shows like X-men or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles they are more likely to become aggressive towards others, disobey authority, and argue with classmates (TV Violence). When asked "Do you notice the effects of violence on children?" Phil Mayer responds that "yes I do. I see It shown in short tempers, fits of anger, and random violence because the child thinks that it is an acceptable way to solve a problem" (Mayer). When children go to play at school or with their friends they express this violent behavior. Children are usually hurt in these confrontations and can cause serious problems. Children who watch and excess of violent programming think the world is a mean and dangerous place. Gerbner found that children become less sensitive to pain and suffering of others, they may become more fearful of the world around them and that children are more likely to behave in aggressive ways towards others then children who watch non-violent programming (APA HelpCenter). Case Western Reserve University conducted a study that reports that children who watch television constantly are associated with violent behavior and signs of psychological trauma. The more children watched television beyond three hours a day, the more likely they were to be troubled and violent (Albrecht).
             .
Children who watched many hours of television violence when they were in elementary school tended to show a higher level of aggressive behavior when they become teenagers. When the children were around eight years old when they watched violence were the most likely to be arrested or prosecuted for criminal acts as adults (Eron). During the ages of seven and eight is when children learn "scripts" which is what the child uses later in life for decisions. For example if a adult wants something and cant have it and gets into a fight over it, it sometimes can be brought back to what the child was brought up around.
