Athletes are a different breed of person they are extremely competitive and will give anything to win. This quote from Sports Illustrated displays the views of many competitors. In that quest to become the best they have discovered the benefits of using anabolic steroids. Steroids are not only used in sports but also in doctors offices. If we have found a way to better our abilities and fix our weaknesses I see no problem with the use of steroids.
             Anabolic steroids or anabolic-androgenic steroids are natural occurring hormones known as testosterone. Both anabolic and androgenic are words originating from the Greek language. Anabolic meaning "to build" and androgenic means "masculinizing". Testosterone's natural androgenic side effects are male maturity, growth of body hair and deepening voice. The hormone's anabolic effects are retaining proteins which aids in the muscle building process. "Although there are many types of steroids with varying degrees of anabolic and androgenic properties, it's the anabolic property of steroids that lures athletes."(Wadler17) That is the part of the steroid that builds the muscles that athletes are looking for. Every athlete strives to be the best and through steroids it puts him or her that much closer. .
             Now the question is can they be administered safely. "We know steroids can be used with a reasonable measure of safety," says Charles Yesalis who has been researching steroids for 25 years. He also wrote the book The Steroid Game. "We know this because they"re used in medicine all the time, just not to enhance body image or improve athletic performance." (Yesalis57) Yesalis also argues the fact that "roid rage" exist. "There's very inconsistent data on whether "roid rage even exists," says Yesalis. According to Yesalis it is not all true what the doctors have been feeding the public.
