midnight in the garden of good

.
The conflicts in Berendt's book are person versus society and also person versus person. For example, the drag queen, Chablis, tries to win over all guys because she thought she was hot stuff. Although she won over her boyfriend, she cant win any other guy because they find out what she was hiding under her clothes. Chablis had a conflict with the author. He was going to a party, and told Chablis about it. She wanted to go with him, but he did not want her to go. He went to the party without her; she got mad and won the fight by showing up. Feeling that Chablis was a cruel she-man, she needed to stick with her boyfriend, the guy that actually accepts her manly features. .
Another conflict was between the voodoo lady and supernatural. She thinks that her husband, who is dead, helps her out of difficult obstacles in life. She went to him for Williams during his trial. However, her husband did not help, seeing that he lost the trial. Blaming the loss on her husband, she still thought he had power. The priestess needs to leave his grave alone and find another hobby besides witchcraft.
On the other hand, the biggest conflict on the story was between the main character and Hansford. Hansford, a guy that lived with Williams, got shot and killed by .
Williams. Williams was determined to win the trial, because he knew the murder was in self-defense. Williams stayed in jail but continued to live his normal life in jail by selling and buying antiques. "He would make a collect call to Mercer House, and then his mother or Barry Thomas would accept his call through to major figures in the world of antiques without ever having to reveal he was calling from a jail." (Midnight, 292). He finally got acquitted in May 1989. "It took 8 years and 4 trials for Williams to convince a jury that Hansford had tried to shoot him first." (Dufrene).
Realism in this novel is both unbelievable and believable. For example, the story about the drag queen was written in an unbelievable manner in the reader's eyes.
