As a result, consumers demanded that the supermarket chain remove such items from their shelves. Following the stakeholder model of business, Trader Joe's responded to the public and complied with their wishes (Steiner and Steiner, 112). .
In light of these campaigns and the ensuing prominence of genetically modified products in the news, other concerns have mounted as well. Consumers have become more aware of the dangers that some modified foods present. Cases of salmonella, botulism, bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) and listeriosis have occurred and heightened public distrust in genetically modified foods. These health hazards have scared the public into initiating reforms through activism, as seen with Greenpeace. In turn, activists have turned to the government as a safeguard against future health threats caused by biologically altered foods.
The Genetically Modified Foods case is a perfect example how the government and businesses work with each other. It exemplifies how government regulates much of how and what businesses can and cannot do. This applies to the seven key environments of business that were discussed in class, in this case it is the governmental environment.
The issue of product labeling was one issue where the governmental environment had affected the business. Genetically modified foods are a very new thing in this world and many people do not have knowledge of how they are produced. In the United States labeling is an optional decision made by the specific firm. In some other countries the regulatory rules are more strict and impose laws mandating labeling. Although the government imposing laws and rules on private business can hurt the business and sometimes the consumer, some regulation should be done here. The company may have to spend some extra money but, the increase in consumer confidence may be beneficial. In this case the government mandating labeling could be advantageous and represents how the governmental environment can have a positive affect on businesses.
