.
Another contrast became apparent in their use of verbal communication. Firstly, she had an excellent vocabulary and used "big words."" She did not use them gratuitously. It was obvious that these words were part of her everyday speech patterns. He however did not understand many of them. There came a point in conversation where she had stopped using all but simple speech and actually began to slow down her speech to an extent. .
Secondly, the mood that was created by her speech was almost comical to listen to. The man was evidently romantically attracted to this woman. His speech had a lulling quality to it and he was using very complimentary language. His language, while not the most eloquent, was flattering and appropriate for a first date. Her language, tone, and pronunciation would have been more appropriate during a business interview.
However, the most revealing aspect of the conversation between these people was not spoken at all. The nonverbal communication was undeniably definitive. When they first sat down the woman put her hands under her legs on the chair and hung her head to read the menu. She didn't look up at him when he made recommendations and she did very little speaking during that time. In fact, her eyes were buried in the menu until the waiter took the order and took it away.
After that (when there wasn't food being eaten), the woman sat back in her chair with her arms folded across her chest. He kept trying to reach for her hand or to make his foot come in contact with her leg and she continually squirmed to avoid it. .
During the intervals between courses her leg bounced. She fidgeted in her chair. It was almost uncomfortable to watch because it was blatant that she wasn't interested. When he spoke (which was a great deal) she very rarely looked him in the eye. She didn't seem interested at all in what she had to say. They few times that she did look like she was intently listening she had a look of shock (or disgust) on her face.
