Criticism is in The Eyes of th

In present times, many phrases and actions are considered offensive and discriminating, but those same phrases in the past were second nature, and were used in everyday dialect. The "n" word was incorporated into the vocabulary of all social classes and stature. These words were spoken as nouns, not adjectives and were there to dehumanize the slaves. After reading this story and absorbing these words, Twain intended for the reader to understand the circumstances surrounding the times during which the story was written in. His intentions were not to insult the readers or anyone but to create the right setting that could add to the description of the story. .
The language involved in this book is not there just to display the discrimination that took place back then, but to also intuitively describe the characters. Twain incorporates the use of this old dialect and language to correctly describe each character and distinguish their "true stature" and realism to the story, since all of Twains characters, including Huck and Jim, are based upon real life people and their encounters. Twain took the true people he based his characters on and embellished on their dialect so that every character sounds and speaks a bit differently. He did this to allow for the reader to distinguish the difference between each of the characters and their stature, just by hearing their dialect of speaking. Of course, the dialects and speech patterns are not exactly of those of the people he related his characters to. He took the dialect from memory and a mix of his own creativity to grab the attention and make the story that more eccentric. "Twain personifies the American folk culture through his use of colloquialism, using speech rather than writing in his dialogue" (James, 14).
In the story, Jim, an uneducated slave, is one of the main characters. The dialect in which Jim speaks strongly indicates his lack of education and refinement.
