In essence they frame their own company and workmanship by allowing it to take the rap for The 545 failure. They also cause problems for singleton whenever she is out alone. Twice she is followed and attacked by union workers. Then another N-22 has an engine problem, which causes the plane to be evacuated. Even though this is definitely not a Norton problem because it is with the engines, which Norton does not produce, the media blames Norton. Until this point the media had no knowledge of the incident on flight 545 because none of the casualties were US citizens because it was a carrier from China. Once the media starts attacking Norton and saying they have unsafe aircraft, people start to look further into Norton's safety records and they find out about 545. Then the media goes on an all out rampage trying to discredit the company for no reason other than it makes good news. As Singleton desperately struggles to find the problem with the plane, she finds many possible causes, but none of them turn out to have been able to do that kind of damage to a plane. Everything she finds leads her to believe it the problems were caused by pilot error, however the pilot has an excellent service record and a lot of experience so she doesn't belive it is his fault. She searches every part of the plane, but really needs the Flight Data Recorder (FDR), but the FDR is messed up and the portion that would allow them to recreate the accident is unavailable. Casey finds that there was a back up FDR, called a QAR, but that they cant finds it on the plane. She needs it at that exact moment because she has also been put in charge of PR for the incident and she has an interview with a popular TV show the following afternoon. So she goes alone to search for the QAR at night in the hangar where the plane is being stored. She has to have it the next day, because if she doesn't tell the interviewer what is wrong they have told her they will discredit the company by making it look as if the problem was a problem they had in the past and claimed to have fixed, which would destroy the company's credibility.
