Notes of a native son

He eventually died from that sickness even though doctors had ways to treat the disease. But because of the fact that his mind was just as sick as his body, he could not survive the TB. When it was time for the funeral, Baldwin began to see his father in a different way. Because of the experiences that he had in New Jersey, Baldwin saw that his father was not so different from everyone else's father and he never reached his full potential. He also came to the conclusion that his father was not just killed by TB but the stress of racism as well. He saw what would become of him if he continued down the path he was headed; he would die on the inside just like his father.
Just like his father, Baldwin tires to live his life to the best of his ability. During World War II, America needed its citizens to help out. So Baldwin began to work in a Defense Plant in New Jersey. Little did he know that he would run into the same problem that his father ran into when he was Baldwin's age, racism. The first racism that he received was in the cafeteria of the Defense Plant. When he asked for food, the people would not serve him. This upset him but not as much as what was to come. His white friend decided to take Baldwin to a movie called, This Land is Mine. The movie reminded him of the racism that he received at a job where he is trying to help his country. However, the pain would not stop for Baldwin there. As he tried to get over all of the things that have been happening to him, he and his white friend went to the American Diner. When they got there, the people would not serve Baldwin there either. The irony of the situation is that the name of the diner is the American Diner. This is showing how America treats the black man in his own country. Baldwin had had enough and he lost his composure. He threw a cup at the female waitress who told him that he could not be served.
