Romeo and Juliet

ii.142-143). Romeo says, "And what says my concealed lady to our cancelled love?" (III.iii.97-98) Juliet's ability to see the optimistic side of the situation strikes a dire blow to Romeo's apparently pessimistic attitude.
Romeo and Juliet's disparate outlook on life are not the only traits showing the contrast in their personality. The two characters are just as much contrasted in their level of dependency on other people. Whereas Romeo is independent, Juliet depends on others. Juliet's dependency is best exemplified in her relationship with the Nurse, especially when Juliet contacts to Romeo through her: "The clock struck nine when I did send the Nurse; in half an hour she promised to return" (II.v.1-2). "What says he of our marriage, what of that?" (II.v.46) These lines tell that she used the Nurse to contact with Romeo. Opposite to Juliet, Romeo shows his independent nature by acting all alone to seek Juliet's love even though it is dangerous for him. Romeo states: "Can I go forward when my heart is here? Turn back, dull earth, and find thy centre out" (II.i.1-2). Not only the Nurse, but Juliet also depends on Friar Lawrence to solve the problem associate with her second marriage. Juliet remarks, "Therefore, out of thy long-experienced time, give me some present counsel" (IV.i.60-61). "I"ll to the Friar to know his remedy" (III.v.241). Romeo, in contrast to Juliet, takes into the action by himself when he heard the news of Juliet's death: "Thou knowest my lodging, get me ink and paper, and hire post-horses; I will hence tonight" (V.i.25-26). "I will lie with thee tonight" (V.i.34). Juliet's continuous need to seek other people's help is contrasted with Romeo's independent nature.
Romeo's independent nature is deeply shadowed by his imprudence which in turn is contrasted with Juliet's thoughtful nature. Romeo acts before he thinks while Juliet always contemplates seriously before taking any actions. While Romeo is being excited about winning Juliet's heart and eager to plan their wedding, Juliet is worrying about their love going too fast.
