Spousal Abuse

For the male spouse to regain this control coercive acts of battering result, physically harming the female. The Power Theory is based on the male struggle for dominance which thrives on the use of coercion. Causes are assigned depending on the conflictual situation and the nature of the abusive relationship; therefore, it is impossible to fully understand all the causes and reasons of a physically abusive relationship and the reasons why many women choose to stay in them.
I am guessing that it will be alarming to research the extent of family violence in the present society.              THE SYSTEMS APPROACH.
The Systems Theory is a way of looking at the family as a system of components that interact with one another to form a whole (Brommel & Galvin, 1999). Norman Ackerman defines the family as a system by stating the behavior of one member "is at all times a function of behavior of all other members" (Ackerman, 1984, p.16). This will result in the change in one affecting all other members and the family as a whole (Ackerman, 1984). A family system consists of: Components, which are the family members, Attributes, which are the unique and specific collective qualities of the family, Relationships among the members and the environment, how the family exists and functions with the outside world. The purpose of the Systems Theory is to explore why things happen in the family and why changes in one member affect the lives of all who are a part of the system. This theory states that each member is a part of a whole; therefore, cause and affect cannot be applied. No one single member of the family is ever to be blamed; therefore, a scapegoat will never exist.
