King Lear

Lear suffers tremendously; in only a short period of time he has gone from an all-powerful king to a weak and unconfident peasant. The storm literally represents the madness inside Lear's own mind and the conflicting pain he suffers from because of his rash decisions. The suffering that he experiences is penance for banishing the only two who are truly loyal to him. When reunited with Cordelia, he immediately apologizes and says, "I"ll kneel down and as of thee forgiveness"(5.3.11-12). Lear begins to make amends for his mistakes and is confronted with the greatest of suffering possible, the death of Cordelia. Throughout the process of suffering, Lear gains peace and self-awareness. Lear grows in his ability to decipher truth from deceit, which allows him to make better decisions. He also ascertains the knowledge that rash decision making is often flawed, so Lear learns to make educated decisions rather than passionate ones, especially in the heat of the moment. The suffering Lear endures creates a new awareness of his surroundings and an independence from material possessions. King Lear is no longer concerned with flattery and money, but with the truth and love. Through turbulent suffering, Lear develops and new sense of self-worth.
Similarly, Gloucester experiences intense suffering, much like Lear, due to the banishing of his loyal child Edgar. Gloucester's suffering begins when he is lead to believe that his son Edgar is plotting against him. Edmund convinces him of a forged letter that Edgar has plans to kill him. When Edmund presents the letter that is supposedly from Edgar, it takes very little convincing for Gloucester to believe him. Although Edgar was the loyal and loving son, Gloucester was unable to see through Edmund's lies and in turn, sends out a search party to arrest Edgar. Gloucester tells his feelings about Edgar, "Abhorred villain, unnatural, detested villain!"(1.2.81-82).
