The White Tower


Gundulf was selected while his trustworthiness role at Canterbury; he was said to be very efficient (Hibbert 20). Being efficient was a great factor for the construction.              During Tudor times the White Tower was a prison, a place of torture, a hell. Of course, there were escapes, but few were documented. The first escape that was documented was done by Prince Gruffydd of Wales. Prince Gruffydd tried to escape from the White Tower and broke his neck (Somerset Fry 30). This fatal incident happened in the fourteenth century. Also during the fourteenth century is when most of the prisoners consisted of royalty which had to pay grievances and fines. Some of the grievances were never paid off. " John king of France, who was not released until 1360, when the Treaty of Bretigny and the payment of three million crowns ransom- (Hibbert 49). From 1356 to 1440 prisoners were held captive in the tower, by the hundreds. Come included Count of Vendome, Duke of Orleans, and the Count of Eu (Hibbert 49). If you consider the time span of 84 years (1356-1440), they were never really released. They were never able to pay off their debts, therefore they died here. Henry V gave unbelievable ransoms which led them to die in the tower (Hibbert 49).
